Ukraine wants to increase trade with ASEAN countries to $5 billion – Kuleba

Ukraine is committed to the growth of trade turnover with the ASEAN countries to 5 billion U.S. dollars.

This was stated by the foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba, taking the ambassadors of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyen Anh Tuan, the Republic of Indonesia, UDDI of Krishnanda and Malaysia Raja Reza on the eve of the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the Association of South-East Asia, the press service of the foreign Ministry.

“Our goal is the growth of trade with ASEAN countries to $5 billion. This is an ambitious task. We are committed to promoting trade and investment growth and hence can provide significant impetus to economic cooperation through implementation of joint mutually beneficial projects”, – said the Minister.

He appealed to partners in ASEAN to examine the possibility of signing a Memorandum on cooperation between the Council of exporters and investors under the MFA of Ukraine and the Business Advisory Council ASEAN.

Kuleba also formally proposed to initiate the activities of the ASEAN Committee with the participation of ambassadors of member States of the Association of accredited in our country, as bases for establishing contacts between representatives of political and business circles.

The parties confirmed their interest in concluding bilateral preferential trade agreements, which would contribute to growth in the short term the volume of trade between Ukraine and ASEAN countries and implementation of mutually beneficial investment projects.

The interlocutors dwelled on the possibilities of scientific bases of the ASEAN Centre on the basis of one of higher educational institutions of Ukraine.

Recall: Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) – a key regional organization in Southeast Asia, established in 1967, which comprises 10 countries: Brunei Darussalam, Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

Ukraine seeks to join the main document ASEAN the Treaty of Amity and cooperation in Southeast Asia and to obtain observer status in the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Association.

If in 2018 the total trade volume with ASEAN countries totaled $2,837 billion in 2019 to $3,065 billion, Exports increased from $1,634 billion to $1,779 billion, and imports from $1,202 billion to 1,540.

Among the key countries-partners of Ukraine in the first half of 2020 – Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore.
