Ukraine sees no contradiction between the EU’s intentions to strengthen their defense capabilities and NATO’s role in ensuring European stability, since trying to develop intense relationships in these areas with both structures.
About it in Brussels at a meeting with the media said Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration Olga Stefanyshyna, which took part in the work of the Commission Ukraine – NATO.
That’s how she answered the question of UKRINFORM whether the government of Ukraine stable political position regarding the commitment of the EU to “strategic autonomy” and the need to maintain strong transatlantic ties.
“I don’t think it makes sense to generate a unique stance with respect to these processes, because this discourse happens within the first European Commission – and not for the first year. The European Commission continues to formulate the strategic directions in the field of security and defense. This is important. Ukraine is trying to join the initiatives. Cooperation within NATO is also a priority from the point of view of security sector reform and defense based on the standards of the Alliance. But we also cooperate with the European defense Agency in those matters where possible, in the context of information exchange, theoretical exercises and training. That is, such a dialogue exists (with both parties – ed.). But most likely, it is political dialogue”, – noticed Stefanyshyna.
As reported, members of the Commission Ukraine – NATO, which is meeting at the ambassadorial level took place on 8 July in Brussels, discussed the next steps for fleshing out cooperation, in particular taking into account the new status of Ukraine as a partner with enhanced capabilities.
