USA violated international law, killing the General Soleimani drone – UN report

The American drone attack in early January 2020 at the airport in Baghdad, which killed the commander of a division of “al-Quds” Islamic revolutionary guard Corps, Iran’s Qasem Soleimani, is a violation of international law. This is stated in the report of the Council on human rights prepared by the special Rapporteur on executions without due process, and arbitrary executions Agnes Callamard.

The report says that the practice of the use of armed drones threatens global security and the assassination of General Soleimani has only increased the danger of international conflict in the middle East.

“The United States carried out the attack without receiving the prior consent of Iraq, thus violating the territorial integrity of this country. This is an important and alarming event. The US has not provided any evidence that General Soleimani was planning an imminent attack on US interests, especially in Iraq, in which case immediate action would be necessary and could be justified”, are presented in the report conclusions of the UN special Rapporteur.

The attack on the General Soleimani and death of his entourage represent a random murder which, according to the international law of human rights, the U.S. is responsible, says the UN report. Callard also noted that General Soleimani attacked in violation of article 2, paragraph 4 of the UN Charter (under which all members of the United Nations shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state and in any other manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations).

In a commentary, “Voice of America”, she told me that more and more countries will be able to justify the attack with the use of drones under the pretext of fighting terrorism.

General Qasem Soleimani, commander of the elite special forces of Islamic revolutionary guard Corps “al-Quds”, was killed on 3 January 2020 in an air strike on the Baghdad airport. The US President Donald trump said that Soleimani was preparing attacks on American targets in the middle East.

This has exacerbated tensions between the US and Iran and indirectly provoked the crash “Ukraine International airlines”, shot down Iranian air defenses near Tehran on January 8, 2020. Iranian authorities have issued arrest warrants for 36 officers of the United States and other countries on suspicion of involvement in the murder of Qasem Soleimani.
