The municipal Council of Venice has approved the introduction of fees for entry to historic centre of the city. The new rule will take effect may 1.
Innovation is another attempt to restrict the flow of tourists, annually overflowing the city.
“This measure is intended to encourage the development of a civilized tourism in our city,” said Council member Giovanni Giusto.
According to him, until the Board is introduced on an experimental basis. During the year local authorities will closely monitor the changes.
In the first phase, the fee will be 3 euros per person. Collected from tourists money will be spent on the maintenance of the city, including the cleaning of the huge amounts of rubbish left behind by tourists.
