The idea that certain foods can have a huge benefit or contribute to rapid weight loss, sometimes has a very attractive appearance. Therefore, it often causes people to spend more money on certain popular products, which is not always so unique, according to its promoters.
As written, the acting Minister of health Suprun on his page in Facebook, they say, in particular, on the so-called “superfood”.
“Superfood are products that contain a high concentration of nutrients and is rich in trace elements, vitamins and minerals. Usually this exotic fruit, vegetables, berries, seeds or grains, which supposedly can bring huge health benefits. Scientists argue that the value of these products is much exaggerated, and their manufacturers use marketing tricks in order to increase profits,” she said.
According to her, the European Agency for food safety (EFSA) reviewed research on the nutritional value of these products and found very real evidence of their health benefits, as claimed by its manufacturers.
So, for example, said the official, Cancer Research UK notes that while there is little scientific evidence that these products can reduce the risk of cancer diseases, however, manufacturers Superfoods often indicate that it’s the opposite.
But the demand for such products is growing globally at great pace. According to a research in the world from 2011 to 2015, the demand for super-foods grew by 202%. In many countries, people buy these products only through the inscription on them “”super””. In the UK is 61% of the respondents in the U.S., this trend is also quite common: in 2015, their sales grew by 36%. They are popular in Germany, Australia, Canada and France. These results further underline the fact that fashion trends and advertising significantly affect consumers ‘ choices, and “healthy” foods they are willing to pay more
Regarding Ukraine, how to convince the head of the Ministry of health, such products have only recently started to gain popularity.
“On the shelves in stores to see products with exotic names like Goji berries, Chia, quinoa, spirulina, or physalis. Some of them actually have a high nutritional value, content of vitamins and minerals and is potentially useful. However, we cannot say that they have undeniable benefits for all. Therefore, if You decide to add to your diet is something new and exotic – be careful. It is worth considering what the products are called Superfoods do not always have the expected nutritional value, and for some may even be contraindicated. Therefore, it is better to consult your doctor to avoid any health risks,” concluded she.
